Hardwood has been a favorite in Bay Area homes for generations, and it is easy to see why. It brings natural warmth, adds visual depth, and gives a house a sense of permanence that few other surfaces can match. Still, the range of choices can feel enormous. There are different species, grades, plank widths, finishes, and construction types, and each one changes how a floor looks and performs. If you are exploring hardwood flooring San Jose California residents can shop for, a good starting point is the solid hardwood collection at Flooring Outlet and More, where you can see real product options before you narrow your list. This guide then walks through each decision in order, so you can match the right hardwood to each room in your home, plan for installation, and keep your investment looking great for decades.
Why Homeowners Keep Choosing Hardwood
Real wood offers a mix of qualities that are hard to copy. It feels solid underfoot, it looks different in every plank, and it can often be sanded and refinished to bring back its original beauty. A well maintained hardwood floor can outlast several rounds of paint, furniture, and decorating trends.
Many buyers also like hardwood because it appeals to future owners. Wood floors are widely seen as a desirable feature when a home is listed. That said, no one should buy hardwood only for resale. The best reason is that you will enjoy walking on it every day. Keep in mind that hardwood is a natural product, so small color changes, tight seams, and slight gaps that open and close with the seasons are normal parts of living with it.
Solid Hardwood or Engineered Hardwood
The first big decision is construction. Solid hardwood is one piece of wood from top to bottom. Engineered hardwood uses a real wood surface on top of a layered core. Both are real hardwood, and both can look nearly identical once installed.
Solid planks shine in stable, above ground rooms and can usually be refinished many times. Engineered planks handle humidity swings better and can often be installed in places where solid wood is risky, such as over concrete slabs. If you are stuck between them, this article on choosing between engineered and solid hardwood for a San Jose home walks through the tradeoffs in plain terms. You can also read a direct answer to the question of which is better, hardwood or engineered hardwood.
Species and Color Choices
Oak remains the most popular species because it is durable, versatile, and accepts a wide range of stains. Red oak has warmer, pinkish undertones, while white oak has a cooler, more neutral character that suits modern and coastal styles. Maple offers a smooth, tight grain. Hickory is very hard and dramatic. Walnut brings deep chocolate tones for a rich, formal look.
Color affects how a room feels. Light and natural tones open up smaller spaces and hide dust. Medium tones give a balanced, timeless look. Dark floors create contrast and drama, but they can show dust, pet hair, and scratches more readily. Prefinished or Unfinished Boards
Prefinished hardwood arrives with the stain and protective coating already applied at the factory. It installs faster, produces less dust in your home, and lets you walk on it soon after installation. Many factory finishes are very durable, and the small beveled edges between planks are part of the look.
Unfinished hardwood flooring is sanded and finished after installation. This gives you a perfectly flat surface with no bevels, and it allows fully custom color. It also means more dust, more time, and a longer wait before the room is usable. It is a good option for homeowners who want to match an existing floor, create a signature color, or build a very seamless look across rooms. Whichever way you go, ask the installer how long the finish needs to cure before furniture and rugs can return.
Plank Width, Length, and Texture
Plank dimensions shape the personality of a room. Narrow strips feel traditional and tidy, mid width planks are a safe all purpose choice, and wide planks feel modern and generous. Longer boards mean fewer seams, which many people find visually calming.
Wider planks can be more sensitive to humidity change because there is more wood in each board, so they suit homes where indoor conditions stay steady. Surface texture matters too. A smooth, glossy face shows every scratch. A wire brushed or hand scraped face hides small dents and everyday wear, which makes it a smart pick for households with kids and pets.
Brands and Collections to Look For
Hardwood quality can vary widely between manufacturers, so it helps to learn a few names and ask questions about each. Flooring Outlet and More works with several brands and lists collections such as Bergamo, Garrison, and Parma Floors, and it is also listed as a dealer for Mirage hardwood. Availability changes, so always ask the team which collections are currently in stock.
If you like wide, European inspired planks, Monarch Plank hardwood flooring is worth a look for its style and sustainability story. Hardwood Room by Room
Living and dining rooms are where hardwood earns its reputation. The floor is on display, foot traffic is moderate, and moisture is low. For more ideas, see this guide to the best flooring for a living room.
Bedrooms are another strong match. Hardwood feels warm to the eye, and a rug beside the bed adds softness. Hallways and entries benefit from durable species and matte finishes because they see the most traffic.
Kitchens can work with hardwood if you are careful about spills and choose a well sealed product, though many homeowners prefer more moisture tolerant materials here. Take a look at the guide to the best type of flooring for a kitchen before deciding. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and damp basements are generally not good homes for solid hardwood. For those areas, a waterproof product is the safer path.
Subfloor, Moisture, and Climate
Every hardwood floor depends on what lies beneath it. The subfloor should be flat, dry, and solid, and any squeaks or soft spots should be fixed before installation. Concrete slabs need moisture testing, and some products require a specific moisture barrier or adhesive.
The Bay Area climate is mild overall, but indoor humidity can still swing between seasons, especially in homes with heating or in houses near the water. Keep an eye on humidity levels and follow the manufacturer’s recommended range. If your project involves a slab, this guide to installing hardwood floor over concrete covers the preparation steps that matter most.
Planning the Installation
Installation method depends on the product and the subfloor. Nail down is common over wood, glue down is common over concrete, and floating installation is available for many engineered products. Each method has its own preparation and timing.
Most wood needs to acclimate in your home before installation, so plan for that in the schedule. Furniture must be moved, old flooring removed, and the subfloor inspected. If you want an experienced crew, Flooring Outlet and More provides flooring installation services from licensed contractors, plus removal of your old material. For a general sense of timing, see this overview of how long flooring installation takes.
Hardwood Floor Maintenance
Good hardwood floor maintenance is simple and pays off for years. Sweep or vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove grit. Wipe spills right away. Use a cleaner made for wood finishes, and never soak the floor with water or use steam cleaners unless the manufacturer says it is safe.
Felt pads under furniture prevent scratches, and entry mats catch grit and moisture. Keep pet nails trimmed and use rugs in high traffic paths. For extra protection, read about the best ways to protect your hardwood floors from damage. Every so often, a deeper clean can bring back the shine, and this guide explains how to deep clean hardwood floors safely.
Budget and Value
Hardwood prices depend on species, grade, thickness, finish, and brand, and installation adds to the total. A full budget should include removal of the old floor, subfloor work, underlayment or adhesive, trim, transitions, baseboards, and furniture moving. Ask for written quotes that list materials and labor separately.
Think about value over time. A floor that can be refinished may outlast several cheaper replacements. At the same time, the most expensive plank is not automatically the right choice for a rental unit or a guest room. Balance the investment against how long you plan to stay and how hard the room will be used. Keep receipts, warranty documents, and box labels in one folder so any future claim is easy.
Common Mistakes When Buying Hardwood
A handful of errors cause most hardwood regrets.
- Installing solid hardwood in a damp basement or bathroom.
- Skipping acclimation and moisture testing.
- Choosing a high gloss dark finish without thinking about dust and scratches.
- Forgetting to ask how many times the floor can be refinished.
- Buying too little material and hitting a batch mismatch later.
- Neglecting humidity control after installation.
- Comparing only price per square foot instead of the whole project cost.
A calm, well researched decision beats a rushed one every time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is hardwood a good choice for homes in the Bay Area?
A: Yes, in most above ground rooms. Mild weather helps, but indoor humidity still changes with the seasons. Engineered hardwood offers extra stability, while solid hardwood suits steady conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s humidity guidance for your product.
Q: Should I choose prefinished or unfinished hardwood?
A: Prefinished boards install faster with less dust and are ready sooner. Unfinished boards are sanded and finished on site, which allows custom color and a flat surface. Your choice depends on timing, budget, and the look you want.
Q: Can hardwood go in a kitchen?
A: It can, with care. Wipe spills quickly, choose a well sealed finish, and use mats near the sink. Many homeowners prefer moisture tolerant materials in kitchens, so compare options before you decide.
Q: How often should hardwood floors be refinished?
A: There is no fixed schedule. Refinish when the finish wears through or scratches become widespread, not by calendar. Solid planks can usually be refinished several times, while engineered planks depend on the thickness of the wood layer.
Q: What is the easiest way to keep hardwood looking new?
A: Sweep often, wipe spills fast, use felt pads under furniture, and place mats at entries. Clean with a product made for wood finishes and avoid excess water. Consistent light care prevents most damage.
